Altec Lansing’s glossy black FX3022 speakers look very distinctive, and we were rather taken with their Dalek-like appearance. The power button and volume controls are located on top of the right-hand satellite. These are the first 2.2 speakers we’ve seen. Instead of being separate units, the subwoofers are built into the satellites. They’re easily loud enough to irritate the neighbours, with bass that is both deep and thumping. We were impressed with their rich and detailed sound, though the treble sounds very bright and overpowering, which can make some music tiring to listen to. Unfortunately, there are no treble or bass controls, so you can’t make any adjustments. The FX3022s are ideal if you want a better bass than a 2.0 set can provide but you don’t want the clutter that a subwoofer brings with it. They are quite expensive, though, and Logitech’s X-230 speakers are a good budget alternative. They’re not quite as loud and don’t sound as detailed, but cost just £30 from www.play.com.
