Motorola has (unofficially) given Moto X customers something to look forward to – the handset will almost certainly get an upgrade to the latest version of Android, currently known as Android L, at some point in the future, meaning there’s reason to hold onto last year’s Moto flagship for at least a little while longer.
After Moto X owner Josh B. posted to Google+ asking whether the handset would get the upgrade, Motorola’s Vice President of Product Management Punit Soni confirmed as such as with a simple “yup”. That short statement is reason to get excited: Android L is perhaps the most radical overhaul of Google’s mobile operating system since it introduced the Holo design scheme with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. It is set to include the Material Design ethos, which adds animation and colour to virtually every onscreen action, as well as performance improvements and new apps.
Soni also responded to another user’s complaints about the speed of receiving updates, saying “We really try to speed things up…”, suggesting the company is indeed listening to its customers and looking to improve beyond its already impressive track record for supplying updates to existing handsets. The budget bargain Moto G was among the first handsets to receive the Android 4.4 KitKat update after Google’s own Nexus smartphones, and the Moto X wasn’t far behind – assuming you bought an unlocked handset that wasn’t hobbled by mobile networks, which take extra time to certify each update before rolling it out to customers.
Despite the confirmation, there’s still no release date attached to the Moto X Android L update – Motorola will likely be waiting for Google to release the final version to developers before it can begin rolling it out to customers. According to Google itself, that should be some time later this year.
