Samsung Galaxy Fold launch delayed again

The Samsung Galaxy Fold launch has been delayed once more. Samsung’s bendy smartphone has developed something of a notorious reputation of late; after an unfortunate spate of hardware faults in the hands of tech journalists, Samsung announced that the launch of the foldable handset was being pushed back to accommodate some hasty internal tests.

At the time, the Korean tech giant suggested that the Fold would launch at the end of May. As of yesterday, May became June, or possibly even July – according to Korean news outlet Yonhap News Agency, a Samsung representative has confirmed that a launch schedule will be announced “in a few weeks”.

A few weeks from now will plonk us somewhere in mid-June, at which point Samsung will reportedly announce an official release date that will, at the very least, be a few weeks later – in other words, the Galaxy Fold almost certainly won’t launch until July.

Yonhap News Agency suggests that Samsung was originally hoping to finish stabilisation work by early June, with the phone launching later that same month. It seems as though the process has stretched on a little longer than anticipated, however, leaving the Fold’s launch uncertain.

Fortunately for Samsung, the competition is going nowhere fast. Huawei is currently labouring under the weight of US-imposed trade sanctions that could have a resounding impact on the Chinese firm’s future. That future involves the Mate X, Huawei’s folding answer to the Galaxy Fold and Samsung’s fiercest competition – at present, there’s no telling whether the launch will continue as planned.

The Galaxy Fold was originally slated for launch on 26 April. After review samples of the product were proven to be faulty by tech journalists and YouTubers alike, Samsung scrapped the launch, promising to cancel all preorders if the product wasn’t ready by 31 May. As it happens, US-based retailer Best Buy has already done exactly that, which is frankly a dead giveaway that the Galaxy Fold isn’t yet fit for general use.
