Canon launches new IXUS and PowerShot cameras

Canon has updated its IXUS and PowerShot camera ranges for 2013, introducing three new models to the IXUS line-up and one new PowerShot compact at the CP+ imaging show in Japan this week. The new flagship IXUS 255 HS compact has a 12.1-megapixel CMOS sensor paired with a 10x optical zoom for a 24-240mm focal length, as well as integrated Wi-Fi for instantly uploading your photos to a PC or the web. When paired with a smartphone, you’ll be able to geotag your snaps, and Canon’s usual range of creative modes are all present and correct. It should cost around £229 when it goes on sale in early March.

Slightly lower down the range are the new IXUS 135 and IXUS 132 models. Booth have a 16-megapixel resolution, but use CCD sensors and Canon’s DIGIC 4 image processor, instead of the CMOS sensor and DIGIC 5 processing found in the IXUS 255. This should make them slightly less adept at handling low light photography.

Both have an 8x optical zoom for a 28-224mm focal equivalent, along with a 2.7in LCD display. The IXUS 135 retains the Wi-Fi module found in the more expensive 255, but the IXUS 132 misses out in order to keep the price down. Expect to pay around £129 for the IXUS 132 or £149 for the IXUS 135 when both launch in late March, with the latter model exclusive to Dixons.
Canon P:owerShot A2500

The A2500, meanwhile, is the new entry-level PowerShot camera. It has a 16-megapixel image sensor and 5x zoom lens for a 28-140mm equivalent focal range. The 2.7in LCD display places it directly below the existing A2600, which has a slightly larger display. It supports 720p video recording, along with Canon’s various creative modes and a battery-friendly Eco setting. It will cost around £89 and be available on the high street in late April.
