Samsung has officially announced the Galaxy Tab4 range, the fourth generation of its mainstream Android tablet line-up, in a selection of screen sizes – but anyone hoping for top spec internals may be disappointed. The Galaxy Tab4 will be launching in 10.1in, 8in and 7in varieties, which all have thinner bezels and weigh less than their existing Galaxy Tab 3 counterparts, but with a standard plastic chassis rather than the faux leather effect seen on the Galaxy Note 3.

The 10.1in Galaxy Tab4 might have the biggest screen, but it has the lowest pixel density of the rangeAll three models will run the latest Android 4.4 KitKat operating system, complete with Samsung’s Touchwiz interface and a selection of the apps found on the Galaxy S5, including Group Play for playing music on multiple devices and Samsung Link for sharing content between networked devices.

Samsung standard plastic on the back – no faux leather hereInternally, there’s very little to separate the three models; they each have the same 1,280×800 resolution LCD display, 1.2GHz quad-core processor, 1.5GB of RAM and 16GB internal storage. The mid-range specifications mean potential customers shouldn’t expect lightning fast performance, and resolution snobs will have to shell out the extra cash for a Galaxy Note 10.1 to get more pixels. All three models have microSD card slots, 3-megapixel rear cameras and 1.2-megapixel front-facing webcams. All three models will be launching in Wi-Fi only and LTE versions and are due to go on sale in the UK from April onwards, although Samsung has yet to announce official pricing.
