The rumours were true: Amazon is launching a new Fire TV Stick. Named the Fire TV Stick Lite, this budget streaming stick replaces the recently discontinued second-generation Fire TV Stick, and is shaping up to be an even cheaper way of enjoying on-demand TV.

But that’s not all. Also announced was the new fully fledged Amazon Fire TV Stick, a higher-spec device with all the bells and whistles we’ve come to expect.

Here’s what we know so far.

The good news is, we have prices for both the Fire TV Stick and the Fire TV Stick Lite. The standard Fire TV Stick will set you back $39.99, and the Fire TV Stick Lite, $29.99. If you hadn’t guessed, the bad news is that we don’t yet have prices for countries outside of the UK.

Both the Fire TV Stick and Fire TV Stick Lite can be preordered right now in the US, UK, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Spain and Canada, according to the Amazon Press website. UK readers can find out more via the links below:

Amazon Fire TV Stick

The standard Fire TV Stick represents only a minor upgrade over its predecessor. In fact, the only difference is that it’s 50% more powerful, and consumes 50% less power when in use. Otherwise, it boasts all the same features: HDR support, Dolby Atmos and streaming at up to 1080p (Full HD).

The Lite differs from its full-fat sibling in a few key ways. For starters, it doesn’t support Dolby Atmos, though it will still do HDR. Then there’s the “Lite” remote, which removes TV controls – that is, the power button and volume controls. This model is still 50% more powerful than existing Fire TV Sticks, however, and still consumes 50% less power when in use.
