A serious error with WHSmith’s email system appears to have compromised the personal details of hundreds of its customers. Customers’ email inboxes are overflowing with messages from the retailer, which contain the personal details of other customers.

The problem appears to be with the Contact Us form on the retailer’s website. Instead of sending messages directly to the retailer, messages sent to that address appear to have been forwarded to members of WHSmith’s customer database. Many of the messages appear to contain details such as customers’ email and postal addresses, phone numbers and more.

Many customers are posting messages on Twitter, showing images of their email inboxes filling up with messages from the retailer.

Customers using Reply to All to complain about the misdirected emails appear to be exacerbating the problem.

We were unable to reach WHSmith’s press office for comment, with the company’s voicemail system seemingly collapsing under the weight of inquiries. The company’s website and Twitter account make no mention of the blunder.
